For over twenty years, Julie worked within higher educational institutions advsing international students, scholars, and faculty. In her present federal role of over ten years, she annually meets onsite with MN-based school officials (PDSOs and DSOs) of the 275+ SEVP certified public high schools, private K-12s, colleges, universities, seminaries and other educational locations. Beyond these yearly visits, she has delivered over 100 presentations to provide outreach and training.
In 1998, her first-hand experience with a natural disaster occurred when a tornado damaged the campus where she worked. The storm impacted the entire campus was closed for three weeks. She wrote a chapter on natural disasters for the 2001 NAFSA Crisis Management in Cross Cultural Setting publication by compiling interviews of international educators who had also gone through disasters of earthquakes, floods, fires, hurricanes, ice storms.
Julie continued to present on natural disaster preparedness at state meetings and regional NAFSA conferences. During Hurricane Katrina (2005), Julie assisted with the NAFSA Katrina Task Force efforts. Julie revised the chapter on natural disasters for the 2015 NAFSA Crisis Management in a Cross-Cultural Setting publication. She created the NAFSA checklist “Responding to a Disaster in the University Community” and submitted the chapter prior to her becoming an SEVP Field Representative in 2014.
Julie continues her commitment to the topic of natural disaster preparedness and responsiveness. She has delivered several presentations on the topic of “Emergency Planning for SEVP Certified Schools.” She has included FEMA representatives to co-present at meetings and trainings. As a federal employee to temporarily assist, she served with FEMA representatives during Hurricane Ian (Oct-Nov 2022) at a Florida Disaster Recovery Center and processed applications for temporary housing needed by survivors.
